Overview
Meclofenamate is a prescription medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat several forms of arthritis. It was formerly sold under the brand name Meclomen. Meclofenamate is used to treat pain, stiffness, and swelling caused by psoriatic arthritis.

Meclofenamate is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. NSAIDs help reduce fever, pain, and inflammation. Meclofenamate is believed to work by inhibiting the production of chemicals that promote inflammation in the body.

Meclomen should not be used by people who are allergic to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as naproxen (Aleve) or ibuprofen. Do not take meclofenamate while you are also taking aspirin or another NSAID drug. Meclofenamate should be used with caution by people with a history of asthma, nasal polyps, chronic sinus problems, swelling of the extremities, or liver or kidney dysfunction. Meclofenamate may not be appropriate for pregnant women.

How do I take it?
Meclofenamate is taken orally. Your doctor will prescribe a dosage based on your needs. When taking NSAIDs, it is important to use the lowest dose that is effective and to take it for the shortest amount of time to avoid side effects.

Always follow your doctor’s instructions exactly when taking meclofenamate.

Side effects
Common side effects of meclofenamate include headache, dizziness, rash, diarrhea, constipation, gas, mouth sores, and ringing in the ears.

Rare but serious side effects of meclofenamate may include an increase in the risk of stroke, heart attack, high blood pressure, heart failure and swelling, kidney disease, allergic reactions, birth defects, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Seek immediate medical assistance if you experience pain in your chest or left arm, shortness of breath, numbness in your hands or feet, or sudden weakness on one side of your body.
