Subsequent to an MI last year, and now on several heart medications for life; my nails (always slightly weak, inherited, but also diagnosed as with psoriatic nail pitting, have become much, worse, neither issue being helpful to a mechanical engineer, or a guitarist!
The splits occur at 90° to the nail's leading edge, along the pronounced, and pitted, ridge lines. Often painfully reaching the nail bed and beyond, unless I am able to clip the edge short enough to stop further snagging. (There has… read more
Mine do, and I have horses, garden, and do lots if other physical things.
I was on several neuropathy meds and it seemed to make my nails worse. I had ridge lines and splitting nails. Soon developed nails that bent downward at a 90 degree angle If they got any length to them at all. Dermatologist told me to start taking Biotin and it helped with the splitting. The only thing that really helped was finally getting off of the Gabapentin and the Cymbalta. I wasn't on both at the same time, but one after the other. I have neuropathy, and was having shooting pains into my legs and feet, not to forget the other normal neuropathy pains as well. The two meds listed above really helped with the neuropathy, but played havoc with my nails. Since going off of the meds, nails have improved, but not like they used to be. Biotin really helps with nails and hair, and it is water soluable, so it does not build up in your organs.
You can do the drop of glue yourself. Just a tiny drop stops the splitting.
I do wish you well. :-)
When your nails first start to split, you can put a tiny drop of nail glue. Once dry smooth with a nice nail buffer. The buffer will smooth out the ridges and also smooth the glue. It will last quite some time. Be sure the nail glue is completely dry before buffing.
If you aren't comfortable doing this yourself, find a salon that will do it for you.
Unfortunately, as an Engineer, constantly in danger of damaging nails, I rarely have time to do more than cut the split nail back, and somehow I suspect my employer would object to my taking time off to visit a nail parlour, they only allow me 2 hours to see my GP (it takes me two and a half hours, each way, just to get to work!)
