I'm wrapping up my first month on Otezla. I definitely have noticed a difference in appetite, which my dermatologist warned me about. I've lost more than a few pounds, which I'm happy with, but I'm wondering if this side effect wears off? Does appetite return to normal after a period of time?

Thanks, TJ. It is going pretty slowly, I'm not worried. I do like this side effect, though!

It's great that your dermatologist gave you a heads-up about appetite changes — that's exactly the kind of conversation worth having before starting a new medication!

It's great that your dermatologist gave you a heads-up about appetite changes — that's exactly the kind of conversation worth having before starting a new medication!

Reduced appetite and weight loss are recognized side effects of Otezla (apremilast). One study found that people taking Otezla lost an average of about 4.8 pounds over six months of treatment, so what you're experiencing is well-documented. As for whether the appetite change wears off over time, experiences can vary from person to person. Some people find side effects settle down after the first few months, while others may continue to notice a reduced appetite throughout treatment.

It's worth keeping an eye on your weight and overall nutrition. If the weight loss becomes more than you're comfortable with, or if you notice symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain, it's important to flag that with your dermatologist sooner rather than later.

Staying in close contact with your doctor as you continue through the early months on Otezla is the best way to make sure the medication is working well for you overall.

Well 8 lb in a month is reasonable is they say this is the guideline:

safe and sustainable, general guideline for weight loss is 1 to 2 pounds per week, which translates to approximately 4 to 8 pounds per month. This steady rate helps maintain muscle mass, prevents nutritional deficiencies, and supports long-term weight management rather than rapid, temporary losses.

I would think of you weighed yourself once every 7 to 10 days while taking this initially you can see if there is a steady pace or a sudden increase. I think the increase would be the concern. Hope it all continues to go well.
