I was 17, finished GR 12 and had a part time job at a hair salon. Oh I loved it. Had so much fun coloring my hair all the different colors and then...my scalp started itching and I got lumps of flakes in my hair and on my scalp. My legs were covered and I dont remember if I had it on my arms. Went to dermi and was informed I had Plague PSO. My family supported me but strangers were awful and nasty as they did not know what it was. After 33 years, I'm happy and content with what I have and… read more

Unfortunately I had an auto accident and it very soon after seemed to start all that with the response? I had a feeling of achiness in my bones like I was nothing but skeletal. It was a damper rainy day I remember that sitting at the table in my place and just looking at my arms like I see flesh but they feel like just sore bones. Then later on I'm not sure when came the scalp reaction in the psoriasis. That changed everything for me and how I felt.

Thanks. It was frustrating when it took about a year to diagnose since it was joint affected visible initially only. That was the worst to wait to see what to deal with.
It was a long time ago now but I recall it like yesterday..

Having a flare in different ways after many of managing is difficult also.

Glad you see a trigger for you, Michelle F,but maybe try a small piece of pork chop to see if that is ok vs a whole chop ? Kind of experiment

The trauma is such a shock to our system. I'm sorry TJ, I'm sure it must have been a very difficult time especially if you dont know what is happening to your body. After all these years, I know exactly what triggers a flare. When I eat a pork chop, I start itching within half an hour and the next morning, I'm all flaky. This last for a few days. Then I'll stop eating pork for 2 months and then I'll have another chop! Lol.

As long as we dont give up the good fight. This is a part of my life now, and I have accepted it. I dont know any different and I hope that newbies will realise that what you take into your body, will depend on what your skin and joints decide to show you. We can choose to be dependable on medication etc for a quick fix, or living a healthy lifestyle and have patience by trying self healing and I admit, sometimes things get too bad and you need that quick fix, but, do not become dependable on it as when it's not working anymore, you will need something stronger. (Generally speaking 😀)

Take care

Thank you for sharing your psoriasis journey. Many MyPsoriasisTeam members have similar experiences with delayed diagnosis. Some initially mistake their symptoms for dandruff or other skin conditions before getting a proper diagnosis from a dermatologist.

Common psoriasis triggers include:
- Stress and anxiety
- Infections
- Physical injury (including sunburn)
- Weather changes (especially dry, cold conditions)
- Certain foods
- Stopping medications Your experience of being diagnosed at 17 is not uncommon. One MyPsoriasisTeam member thought their early plaques were just patches of dry skin until they spread more extensively. It's wonderful that you've developed such a positive outlook and found ways to manage your condition through lifestyle changes over these 33 years.

You're absolutely right to focus on overall wellness. Managing triggers and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are key parts of living well with psoriasis.
