Members shared their experiences growing food at home, from small container gardens to fond memories of large family farms with chickens, fruit trees, and homemade preserves. Several members offered practical tips, including using cayenne pepper to deter garden pests, sticking hands in soil to feel grounded, and being patient with plants like rhubarb that take time to grow. A recurring theme was the joy and pride of growing even a little food, with many balancing physical limitations and life circumstances to keep that connection to the garden alive.

Yeah, and dandelion wine? Remember that? Yuck to it all! Whatever they made from it tasted bitter. Salad was the main thing I remember but we refused to eat it.

Tons of pickles-many flavors, canned tomatoes, Grappa wine, canned apples for those yummy pies and jellies of every flavor. My grandmother kept a cold frame out back. Fresh carrots and winter squash whenever you wanted it! Even our dog, Heidi loved the garden for the raspberries. She would get the best down low in the back! Loved it! But hard work!😁

Cynthea-my family garden kept getting smaller and smaller. It was to hard working with a my own family then run down and do theirs too. We got it down to Swiss chard, tomatoes and whatever planted itself in the compost pile. Now potted Basil, catnip, parsley and flowers all on my deck! My grandmother taught us that if you did not feel look in the garden for what ails you. Just sticking both hands into the soil will balance you and get rid of a head ache. Or mud on a bee bite,...πŸ₯’

Growing up in Farmington, Ct. My parents and grandparents lived on an acre of land most of it was food. Chickens and Rabbits for meat and eggs, milk was delivered every morning. 7 types of tomatoes, potatoes, several types of squash, spinach, beans to dry and string beans, peas, herbs. Dad even found mushrooms that we canned for years. Nonie had started with peanuts and grapes when they came here. Fruit trees, raspberries, wild strawberry patches, pears, cherries, and more! πŸ₯’yard work. Dad paid us per bushel of acorns picked up and I got the potato bug picking deal! I kept weird pets-snakes, snappers, spiders, dog and cats, too. They were all hungry critters! Paid for picking Dandilions for salads, too! Everything was hand made! Breads, sausages, Hillbilly stews that you do not want to know what flavor they were. Friends hunted and fished for a change of pace. Best years of our lives! Thank you Mom and Dad!πŸ₯°
