Most of the time, dermatologists can diagnose psoriasis through a clinical examination by looking at your skin and discussing your symptoms. During the physical exam, they will examine:

• Size, location, and shape of skin plaques
• Color of affected areas (which can appear red, brown, purple, or gray depending on skin tone)
• Presence of white, silver, or grayish scales
• Any nail changes like pitting or ridges In some cases where the diagnosis isn't clear, your dermatologist may recommend a skin biopsy to rule out other conditions. They'll also ask about joint symptoms since about 30% of people with psoriasis develop psoriatic arthritis. If joint symptoms are present, they may refer you to a rheumatologist for further evaluation.
