What is medication compounding and is it useful for treating psoriasis?
Medication compounding is when a pharmacist creates a customized medication by mixing specific ingredients to meet your individual needs. In your case, a coal tar compound was likely tailored to a specific concentration or combined with other ingredients to better suit your skin.
Coal tar is actually one of the oldest and most effective FDA-approved over-the-counter treatments for psoriasis. It works by suppressing excess skin cell growth during flare-ups and smoothing the skin. It can help with itching, scaling, and inflammation in both plaque psoriasis and scalp psoriasis.
Your compounded coal tar prescription was likely customized for:
- A specific concentration for your needs
- Better absorption or application
- Reduced odor or staining
- Combination with other beneficial ingredients
Many MyPsoriasisTeam members have found coal tar effective. One member shared that coal tar "completely controlled" their daughter's psoriasis when used daily, though they noted it was "stinky" but worth it.
The FDA considers coal tar products with concentrations between 0.5% and 5% safe and effective for psoriasis. While coal tar can have a strong odor and may stain fabrics, it can be used long-term and is often very effective for managing symptoms.
