How does psoriasis affect the ankles in terms of symptoms and appearance?
Psoriasis on the ankles can show up in several ways depending on the type you have. The most common symptoms include flaky patches of skin that become inflamed and scaly, often with itching or burning sensations.
Here's what you might see on your ankles:
* Raised patches that are red or purple (depending on your skin tone) with a scaly appearance if you have plaque psoriasis
* Smooth, red or purple patches that itch and burn but don't get scaly if you have inverse psoriasis, especially where skin folds meet
* Small, round inflamed spots if you have guttate psoriasis
* Pus-filled blisters under the skin if you have pustular psoriasis
The ankles can also be affected by enthesitis, which is inflammation where tendons and ligaments connect to bone. This is particularly common at the Achilles tendon running down the back of your heel and ankle. Enthesitis causes pain and stiffness that can make walking difficult.
Some people experience general swelling around the ankles, which may feel warm to the touch and appear red or purple. This swelling can be extremely tender and affect your ability to move comfortably.
