How Psoriasis Stole My Confidence — and How I Got It Back (VIDEO)

Posted on May 26, 2026

Psoriasis changed more than Michelle’s skin. The condition affected how she saw herself, how she moved through the world, and how comfortable she felt around other people.

“Psoriasis greatly affected not only my physical appearance and physical condition but also my mental and emotional health,” Michelle said.

Before psoriasis became part of her life, Michelle described herself as outgoing. She enjoyed being around others, meeting new people, and talking face to face. But when her symptoms appeared, her confidence shifted.

“I love being a social person. I love being that kind of person. I love meeting people. I love dealing with people and communicating with them on an in-person basis,” she said. Developing psoriasis seemed to have an unexpected effect: “I lost confidence in myself.”

Psoriasis greatly affected not only my physical condition, but also my mental health, and also my emotional health. I love being a social person. Meeting people, but I had that psoriasis, I lost confidence in myself. It's very difficult for me. I started believing in myself again. You need to take care of your well-being, not only physically, but also emotionally and mentally.

You need to be very mindful of what you do. I make sure that I sleep at least eight hours a day. I do exercise even if it's just like Zumba. Things that you can do at home. Walking in nature really, really helps and notice, you know, beautiful things around you and become kinder to myself. I celebrate small wins, so even if it's like waking up in the morning pain free, and don't be afraid to seek support also, that's very, very important.

I have like what I call a health team, my primary doctor, of course, my dermatologist. Also, we need to pick or to choose our specialist very, very carefully. We owe that to ourselves to give our health, to give our body the best that we can give. Learn more and connect at MyPsoriasisTeam.com.

Believing in Herself Again

The emotional toll of psoriasis was real for Michelle. Everyday interactions felt different, and that change was hard to accept. Still, over time, she began rebuilding the confidence she felt she had lost.

“It was very difficult for me, but I started believing in myself again,” she said.

That belief did not return all at once. For Michelle, taking care of herself meant looking beyond physical symptoms. She learned that her emotional and mental well-being needed attention, too.

“You need to take care of your well-being, not only physically, but also emotionally and mentally. You need to be very mindful of what you do,” she said.

Creating Supportive Daily Habits

Michelle began focusing on routines that helped her feel more grounded. Sleep became an important part of her self-care. “I make sure that I sleep at least eight hours a day,” she said.

Movement also became part of her routine. She didn’t pressure herself to do anything intense. She chose forms of exercise that felt realistic and available, “even if it’s just, like, walking or doing Zumba and just things that you can do at home,” Michelle said.

Walking outdoors became especially meaningful. Spending time in nature gave her space to slow down and notice the world around her.

“Walking in nature really, really helps. I love to walk. I love to visit new parks and just walk — not really hike, but just walk and notice beautiful things around you,” she said.

Learning To Be Kinder to Herself

As Michelle continued living with psoriasis, she learned to recognize progress in small ways. A good morning, a less painful day, or a moment of peace became something worth noticing. “I have become kinder to myself. I celebrate small wins,” she said, “even if it’s, like, waking up in the morning pain-free.”

She also relies on care and support. Her health team includes medical professionals who help her manage psoriasis. “I have what I call a health team,” Michelle said. “I have my primary doctor, of course, and then I also have my dermatologist.”

For others living with psoriasis, Michelle’s message is rooted in self-compassion and support. “Don’t be afraid to seek support — that’s very, very important,” she said. “We owe that to ourselves — to give ourselves, to give our health, to give our body the best that we can give.”
