Itch Relief and Psoriasis

Posted on July 28, 2019

Itching caused by psoriasis can be unbearable and lead to sleepless nights, depression, pain, and anxiety. Even when other symptoms of psoriasis have abated with treatment, the itching can linger, making the issue one of the most discussed topics among members of MyPsoriasisTeam.

Some of the top treatments for itching used by MyPsoriasisTeam members include ultraviolet B (UVB) light therapy, corticosteroids, Dovonex (calcipotriene), Trexall (Methotrexate), Psoriasin (coal tar), Otezla, and Humira. There are many other options for relief of itching from psoriasis, which members share with the community.

Some of the other options suggested include antihistamines.

  • Allegra: “I take Allegra daily and don't itch much.”
  • Benadryl: “I have taken Benadryl and that helps a lot!”
  • Hydroxyzine: “It helps with itching.”
  • Loratadine: “Have you ever tried taking Loratadine? It's the generic form of Claritin. When I have my flare-ups, my dermo always tells me to take three of those a day... I definitely don't itch as much.”

Natural treatment suggestions for relief of itching include:

  • Coconut oil: “Coconut oil (organic) works well for the itching. Instant relief for me.”
  • Oatmeal: “Oatmeal bathes and oatmeal paste will get rid of scales and soothe itching.”
  • Hemp butter: “Hemp butter from The Body Shop is a favorite of mine.”

On MyPsoriasisTeam, the social network and online support group for those living with psoriasis, members discuss their personal challenges dealing with itch relief and psoriasis.
