A MyPsoriasisTeam Member asked a question 💭
Swindon, UK

It seems that as a PsA sufferer especially in the Knuckles and wrists, (recently diagnosed) I am about to have my first injection biologic. Has anyone had success with a particular biologic for the above. Nearly 70, but fit and active and concerned that my golf will have to stop. Warmest Keith

Which biologic might work best for your knuckles and wrists?

It's great that you're staying active and thinking ahead about protecting your joints! Several biologics have helped MyPsoriasisTeam members with joint pain in their hands and wrists.

TNF inhibitors are often recommended as first-line biologic treatment for psoriatic arthritis. These include:

* Etanercept (Enbrel) - effective for both joint and skin symptoms
* Adalimumab (Humira) - helps reduce inflammation and control joint pain
* Golimumab (Simponi) - reduces inflammation, joint pain, and swelling
* Certolizumab (Cimzia) - reduces joint pain, swelling, and stiffness
* Infliximab (Remicade) - works similarly to neutralize inflammation

One MyPsoriasisTeam member shared: "I started on a biologic called Cimzia months ago after suffering for years with pain in my hips and other joints. It's a monthly injection, and it has saved my life."

Another member said: "My doctor prescribed injections, and my joint pain was greatly reduced after the first one. It's amazing!" What if TNF inhibitors don't work?

If your body doesn't respond well to TNF inhibitors, other biologic options include interleukin inhibitors like:

* Guselkumab (Tremfya)
* Ixekizumab (Taltz)
* Risankizumab (Skyrizi)
* Secukinumab (Cosentyx)
* Ustekinumab (Stelara)
* Abatacept (Orencia)

Keep in mind that biologics take time to work - typically up to three months before you'll notice significant improvement in your symptoms. Important things to know before starting:

Your doctor will screen you for certain infections before prescribing a biologic, and you'll want to make sure your vaccines are up to date. Because biologics affect your immune system to reduce inflammation, they can increase infection risk.

The good news? Recent studies show biologics may actually reduce serious heart risks by 35% compared to older treatments - an important benefit as we age.

Work closely with your doctor to find the right biologic for you. Many people continue their active lifestyles, including golf, once their symptoms are well-managed. Don't give up on your game just yet!
