Many community members shared frustrating experiences of being misdiagnosed for years before finally receiving accurate diagnoses, with several describing journeys spanning decades from conditions like neuropathy to psoriatic arthritis, or fungal infections to psoriasis. Several members emphasized the importance of seeking specialists certified in specific conditions, advocating for oneself by questioning diagnoses, doing personal research, and not giving up when something doesn't feel right, with one member waiting over 25 years before finally finding relief through proper treatment. A recurring theme was the emotional toll of being dismissed, given incorrect treatments, or told symptoms were purely mental, underscoring the value of persistence and self-advocacy in navigating complex autoimmune conditions.

I actually had a dermatologist scare the hell out of me by telling me she thought I had CREST Syndrome-which is related to sclerosis/scleroderma. After 2 biopsies & blood work, she decided that wasn't it. I found a new Dermatologist & it turned out that the red spots on my hands & arms were in fact guttate psoriasis.

I am now in my early 60's. Over 30+ years I have been told many different reasons for my extremly elevated inflammatory lab values. pain, stiffness, weakness, etc. To list only a few. Lupus, MS, fibromyalga, obesity, and depression. I was never treated for anything....I was just referred to the next specialist: orthopedic, nuerologist, infectious disease specialist, pysiologist, and rheumatologist...each agreed due to my lab values that something was wrong but they could not figure out what or treat me. At age 50-ish I started to have psoriasis skin lesions. My primary care doctor insisted I was just depressed and gave me a topical ointment and a RX for prozac (did not fill) he commented "I probably didn't need the ointment, but I could try it". I researched, and researched all things psoriasis. I found a dermatologist in my area certified by the Natioanl Psoriasis Foundation (note: the only MD certified by them in my area) He instantly recognized what was happening to my body. I started on Humeria because by this time my symptoms also included congestive gastropothy, IBD, musculoskeletal pain, and psoriasis. Humira was the magic bullet for all three issues. It took 25+ years to find my answer. I am forever grateful. I believe more is known about PSA now ,but many if not most general practitioners do not recognize it and even after you have been diagnosed correctly they do not understand the far reaching systemic issues that can occur with this autoimmune disease process. I pray that a deffinitive test to identify PSA early will someday soon be available for others, allowing treatment to start early.
