That response might leave you feeling a little... unshampooed of answers! ๐Ÿ˜„ While your dermatologist may not have specific concerns about your current products, research suggests that shampoo choices can actually make a real difference for scalp psoriasis.

Around 80% of people with psoriasis experience it on the scalp, so finding the right shampoo is worth paying attention to. Here are some key ingredients to look for in medicated shampoos:

- Coal tar โ€“ Slows down skin cell growth, reducing scaling and thickening of scalp lesions
- Salicylic acid โ€“ Softens and helps remove plaques more gently
- Selenium sulfide โ€“ Reduces yeast and bacteria buildup that can worsen inflammation
- Zinc pyrithione โ€“ Another helpful option for managing scalp symptoms There are also ingredients to avoid, particularly sodium lauryl sulfate โ€” looking for "sulfate-free" shampoos is a good idea. Fragrances and dyes can also irritate sensitive psoriatic skin.

A tip shared by a MyPsoriasisTeam member: avoid washing hair daily, as this can dry out the scalp and strip away natural oils and helpful treatments.

It's also worth alternating between medicated and non-medicated shampoos, since overusing ingredients like salicylic acid can actually dry the scalp further โ€” and a dry scalp is an itchy scalp! A good conditioner can help keep hair healthy while using medicated shampoos.

Look for products carrying the National Psoriasis Foundation Seal of Recognition as a helpful guide when shopping.

My Derm told me to alternate between T-Cell and T Gel but only twice a week as they can make your hair dry. It helped a little but it wonโ€™t treat the psoriasis, you need something else either creams or other treatments. Good luck!

The type of shampoo and conditioner absolutely does make a difference! There are products out there that are very mild and ( clean formulation)
I use Paul Mitchell shampoo one original. then follow up with Paul Mitchell leave in conditioner. Conditioner only on the ends of my hair never on the scalp. I try to stay away from styling products as much as possible. Good juju hope you find something that helps to ease the burning and itch.

I have tried so many things but always ends up the same. I took to using baby shampoo as it is really mild and while it worked really well, eventually my scalp got used to it and still itched. So I asked the chemist who put me onto T-Cell and that works really well. Also, put Turmeric into you daily diet....sprinkle Turmeric powder over your dinner meal and black pepper on top. I used the powder and pepper on my tomato, egg, salad, beetroot, and cucumber sandwiches but you MUST have the black pepper to make it 2000 times more potent. That goes through your body, into your joints, scalp, skin and aids with pain and itchiness a lot.
